Guildford Town Centre Cycle Race Wed 7 July 2010

What it’s about

This is an annual event organised by the Charlottesville Cycle Club. A section of Guildford’s town centre is closed to traffic to form the circuit. The circuit is formed from the High Street, Chertsey Street, North Street and Market Street. The direction is anti-clockwise. There are three races starting at 19:00, 19:30 and 20:00, the final race being the longest lasting about an hour, the entrants being of a national standard.

Photography

This is a great opportunity to photograph some action. The circuit is tight and consists of many dozens of laps so there is continuous activity to shoot at all times. For lenses to bring I suggest a wide angle, the wider the better, since sometimes the cyclists may only be a couple of feet away from you. A zoom to 200mm for the head-on shots. Tripods not really practical since there will be a lot of spectators. The light will drop off as the evening progresses so a flash gun would be useful to have.

Getting there

Map of Guildford

Those going from Yateley we could organise shared transport amongst ourselves. There are plenty of car parks in Guildford.I will be using the one in Bedford Road (which is opposite the Crown Court and near the Odeon cinema). Most car parks now charge £1 for the evening (they did not last year). Millbrook car park may be more convenient; be aware you cannot do a right turn into Millbrook car park, so if you are approaching from Onslow Street, turn left into High Street then right into Quarry Street. At the lights, turn right into Millbrook; the car park is on the left. The following link gives a good overview of all parking: http://en.parkopedia.co.uk/parking/carpark/millbrook/gu1/guildford/

Meeting up

A number of us are meeting up at the George Abbott Pub (just over the bridge, near the Whitehouse) at 6pm. Apparently they do cheap 2 for the price of 1 meals there, so get there promptly to team up with a bogof partner. Email me at richard.pullan@gmail.com if you intend to go; a mobile number could be handy.
